Smart Fish Method ROLL SEA OTTER to SUNFISH is now a Conditioned Response

“A CONDITIONED RESPONSE or REFLEX is some action or feeling that you learn to do in response to a specific situation or stimulus.”

“PATTERNING is the forming of fixed ways of behaving or of doing things by constantly repeating something.”

“PATTERNING is simply a factor of:

1) Recognition. 2) Repetition. 3) Layering.”

* The progression is best described as a series of “LAYERS” instead of “Steps” that involve unique ways to teach, assist, and use teaching aids.

* The teachers must RECOGNIZE or know and trust the progression & REPETITIVELY PRACTICE the routines because Repetition = Mastery for both teacher & student.

* Keep in mind that this path towards becoming an independent, confident swimmer is best described as a RAMP, and it doesn’t always incline.

* There may be apparent regressions, but those are mainly due to behavioral, emotional, and cooperation issues… not regressions in skill.

* In order for this toddler to have learned to turn over and float by himself so well, he started out practicing the ERRORLESS INTRODUCTION to it.

* SEA OTTER Layer 1: Head-up Roll-Over into a Back Float (Full Teacher Assist + Teaching Aid Assist)

* SEA OTTER Layer 2: Submerge… then Roll-Over & Back Float (Full Teacher Assist + Teaching Aid Assist)

* SEA OTTER Layer 3: Submerge… then Roll-Over & Back Float (Partial Teacher Assist + Teaching Aid Assist)

* SEA OTTER Layer 4: Submerge… then Roll-Over & Back Float ( Teaching Aid Assist only)

* SEA OTTER Layer 5: Submerge… then Roll-Over & Back Float (INDEPENDENTLY) * Even better than just KNOWING THE SKILL is that this is a CONDITIONED REFLEX. He rolls to float automatically when he feels like he’s falling or entering a large body of water, without thinking about it.
